NORFOLK ISLAND- a small subtropical island in the South Pacific. The Island’s population of some 2000 persons, is augmented by a steady stream of visitors, mostly from Australia and New Zealand, on a year round basis.
For those of us who live here, however, Amateur Radio has proved to be a fascinating hobby. We are only two operators who “speak to the World” on a regular basis, and, to the uninitiated, the “World” in an amateur radio sense, means a couple of millions of people who wish to contact Norfolk Island. The reason for this is that, as far as amateur radio is concerned, Norfolk Island counts as a “country,” and there is a coveted award , DXCC, to be won for contacting at least 100 countries and eventually all 337 of them As if this demand on us were not enough, we have also travelled to even more remote and/or exotic “countries” over the years. The Old Timer sets down Jim’s 60 years in the hobby, while Kirsti gives her impressions and experiences in QRV, A DXer’s Life for Me.
